students Throughout this class you have learned about the different characteristics of digital media. You have learned about products, jobs, software, and production. Now you need to ask yourself "What program should I study?" There are programs in Digital Media Design & Production, Internet Services, Computer Arts: Animation, Programming (Java), Web Design & Production. The best place to learn about the different programs is at the Digital Media Web Site- www.digital-media.westvalley.edu. This web site has all the information about the class and requirements for a degree and certificates. In addition, please talk to Michael Byers a counselor for Digital Media classes and General Education. Please call Michael Byers 408.741.2196 make an appointment.

Choosing a certain educational program will help guide you into a career. Before choose a course of study please consider the following:

  1. What makes you happy - need to choose a career that will provide you with the opportunity to have a working position that you will enjoy. Need to enjoy your job because you will be spending many hours performing certain task.
  2. Money - do not choose a program that you believe will give you the opportunity to make the most money. Many students say, "I should have been a programmer - they make the most money." Well yes they do make lots of money, but work long hours in front of a computer looking a code. On-the-other-hand, most artist and designer make decent money especially if they have talent.
  3. Learning new thing - I hope you like school. Digital Media is always changing and you will need to continue learning right along with the changes.
  4. Team - all digital media is put together by teams. Hope you like people. In many position you will need to work with others on certain task.

The Digital Media/Internet Services Program

In lesson 3, I talk about 3 major categories of jobs in digital media. There was: Technical Development, Creative Development, and Project Management. Let see how West Valley Degrees and Certificates fit into those categories.

1. Technical Development - "Data people." Digital media is about getting information across to others. Technical people organize large amounts of information "database" into usable information.
Internet Services - this program concentrates in the creation, design, and programming of Internet related products. This is were you would go to become a Web Master.
Programming (Java) - this program concentrates on the programming of data bases and application using Java. Java. is a very popular object oriented programming language. People that know how to program in Java. are in high demand.
2. Creative Development - "Ideas people." Creative people. Organize information into visual screens that people use to access information.
Computer Arts: Animation - this program concentrates in the creation and design of 2 and 3D animation. This program focus in on the creative use of the computer in art. People taking this program should be prepared for careers in Game design and TV and movie special effects.
Digital Media Design & Production - this is the most broad program. The main focus is on Production of real products. The program prepares people for the creation, design, and programming of interactive presentation, web pages, videos, published material. Prepare people for careers in design, programming"HTML, Lingo" video editing, interface design.
Web Design & Production - this program concentrates in the creation, design, and programming of web pages. Prepare people for careers as web masters, designers, and programmers.

3. Project Management - "Leadership People". The organizers. Management people are incharge of digital media development. They have the vision to see a need for a product and how to create that product.

All programs in Digital Media can lead you into management. Most manager are people who have work in the field more that five years. My recommendation is to take some marketing and business classes as electives.
