Lesson 5 - Legal Issues Facing Internet Marketing - some of the info in this lesson is older. But the inportant concept is many of these legal issues are still part of the Internet.

One of the greatest challenges of technology today is "the law". With the speed at which change affects technology, there is little legal precedent for companies to claim to their intellectual property.

There are many legal issues facing SEO providers. Yes some of the articles are older but the information is still relevant today.

Is it legal to include Trademark words in your meta tags? For example, can I include Adobe Photoshop in the Digital media web site? Read this article about including Trademarks in key words. Also, here is another article.

Is it legal for search engines to sell keywords? Some search engines sell keywords to companies. When a user types in "playboy" into Netscape they will receive a banner ad that does not belong to Playboy. It is some other company's ad. This practice is the selling of keywords. Some things that could get you blacklisted. What is considered Spamming to the Search Engine.

  • Link Farms - web site that are just links to each other.
  • Repeat words - if you repeat words too many time you could be blacklisted
  • Background color text - if there is text same color as background
  • Submitting to search engines to often - many of the software application help with this. Web Position Gold has a Submitter application that knows what is the best time to re submit to Search engines without Spamming.
  • Having Keywords that don't relate to the subject area of web site.

The paid placement maybe deceptive to the user. Many organization believe that paid placement is false advertising. They believe many users believe that the ranking high means the web site is the most relative to the search requested. But with paid placement this may not be the case.
