Welcome to Adobe Flash. Flash is a computer application that is used to create a variety of different types of media. People use flash to create animation for web site, Cartoon Animation for TV, Interactive CD-Roms, DVD Menus, Video playback - yes youtube.com is a Flash format, ads for web sites, and just plain slide shows. So you can see there is a lot to Flash. It is not just one thing. As a student you will need to find which part you want to learn. I can only show you some techniques on how to use the Application. You will need to find out what works best for you. Flash is very hard to learn. It is not an application that I would start with, you should know some Photoshop/Illustrator/Dreamweaver or some kind of easier application first. It is not that Flash is so much different than these application, drawing on the computer is pretty much the same, it is that Flash has time. You don't make one drawing, like Illustrator, you will need to make several drawing over a series of frames to achive motion. If done right, you can make creative and fun media. Lets look at some more examples.

2. I get many students who are looking to learn some programming, in this class we will have some basic programming using Action Script 3. In Fall I will have more advanced Flash Programming class. Action Script 3 is the programming you would use for Flash CS3 and CS4. Some simple examples - Example 1 - Example 2 - Example 3
3. I get students who want to do just animation - Example 1 - Example 2 - Example 3 - yes these last 2 are high school students
4. Many students how do slide shows - Example 1 - Example 2 - Example 3

How this class works? Each week will be a series of lessons. Each Lesson Includes.

1. Examples - from web sites or former students homework. Examples of the concept presented in lesson.
2. Book Reading - The main book for this class will be Book Flash CS4 Professional ISBN 0-321-59192-5 - I will post page numbers for reading and examples to try. See below for other book selections. The book is published by http://www.peachpit.com
3. Video instruction - These are video instruction that you watch on you computer. These are examples on how to do the homework.
4. Homework - Each lesson will have a Flash example you will need to complete. You will need to do 1 lesson a week. Each lesson may take you several hours. You should plan to spend 2 days a week for 3 to 4 hours. But that is what it takes to learn Flash.

1. What if I have CS3 - yes it is fine to use CS3. There is some animation differences that you will not be able to do in CS3. buy the Flash CS3 Professional ISBN 0-321-50291-4 book.
2. What if I have CS2 - well that is getting little harder to get through this class. The programming is little different.
3. What is the programming - the programming I will demonstrate in class is ActionScript CS3.

Don't have a Book

Wow there are many books other there for Flash. Don't think you must use the book I have listed. It is a good reference book, It has examples of how to do things. It is a great book to look up concepts, but it is not a tutorial book. Heres some other book ideas.

1. How to Cheat in Adobe Flash CS4 ISBN 978-0-240-52131-2 This is a great book for Character Animation. I like it.
2. Adobe Flash CS4 Professional Classroom in a Book ISBN-10: 0-321-57382-X - this is a tutorial book. It has step-by-step instruction. It is a great book. You should by this book if you like step-bystep books.
3. I am sure there are more but these are just the ones I have.
