Digital Picture Camera - Many of digital cameras today can do both still pictures and some video. In this class we will do slide show type videos. You should have some type digital camera. Here's an example of Slide Show type video.

camera I have a digital Olympus camera you can borrow for this class.

Web Cams - These are camera that connect to you computer to do short talking head like video. You should buy one for this class. Which one is really up to you. The better quality are usually more money.

  • Some of you have email me saying you didn't want to buy a webcam. I just thought it would be good for us to talk over the Internet. If you don't want to buy a web cam thats fine.

Why do I need to get? so you can talk to you family and friends for free. And also to me, I will want to chat with you over skype for this class. Yes free anywhere in the world using skype.com - it is the greatest thing ever. I talk to friends in Europe and South America for free.

Windows - I recommend the Logic tech

Mac - Many macs come with built in camera, the quality is OK, if you want better quality get an external camera

Microphone - You really don't need to buy a microphone for this class if you get a web cam. You can use the web cam to talk into the computer, but the quality is not very good. Not professional enough. Another option is head set. Better than web cam. Or best option is profession microphone and mixing board. see list.

How to input audio into computer?

  1. Web Cam works but not good quality.
  2. Yes most apple has built in mic - not professional quality
  3. Head set microphone work much better, still not full professional.
  4. Best if you have $100 - Professional Mic I use the Shure SM58 Microphone with Behringer Pre Amp Mixing preamp. Well maybe $150 for all this but it really makes all the difference.

Video Camera - wow there are many different types of video cameras and many different prices. I will list some components that I look for in Video Camera.

Heres some cameras I like.

  1. Heres an inexpensive camera - This camera seem to have Mini DV Tape, Microphone input, and I believe firewire. $219
  2. Heres a medium price camera - Well $1000 it is Canon v30 I have 3 Canon V20 that you can borrow to use in this class.

Things I look for in Video Camera?

  1. CCD - this is the part that convert the light into data. 1 or 3 CCD camera. A 3 CCD is better quality and better in low light. More money.
  2. I look for camera that has external Mic inputs. What? I look for a camera I can connect an external microphone. Most camera less than $1000 only have an internet Mic.
  3. Tape - I like the camera to be able to record onto the mini DV tape.
  4. Output - Your camera should have a Firewire/IEEE 1394 type of connect to be able to download your video.
  5. Manual Focus
  6. HD settings
  7. I would avoid the DVD cameras They tend to have problems getting the video into the computer.
  8. Like the HDMI connection - the computer might not be able to use this but the TV looks great.
  9. I look for Optical Zoom, Digital zoom is useless.
