Lesson 1 - This week is a introduction to the class. In this class you can use either Mac or Windows computer.

Concept for the week - I have been using the Internet and www for the past 15 years. Over these years I have seen a dramactic shift in the way content is delivered. Back in 2000 there was very little video on the Internet. Today video is what most people view on the Internet. Just check out http://www.msn.com/ today, almost every link is to video type content. Checkout http://www.msn.com/ in 2000 "may take long time to load" much different in 10 years. Why? Bandwith - most people today have high speed connection. But, really Flash video player. Almost all the video you see on the Internet today is the Flash Player format. Hands on - Right click on any video you find on the Internet. You will see Flash Player plugin, even the ads are Flash. Thats why Adobe bought Macromedia. Wow look at the Rocketboom. talks about Boxee - online video. Right over the Internet, make it full screen. http://www.boxee.tv/

Goals of the week - Watch some video online. Install some of the software listed.

Reading - book Web Video

Read - Introduction - A good introduction to the book.

Chapter 1 - This is a great introduction video on the web. Make sure to visit the online video channels from page 24.

Software downloads - week 1 heres a list of some software you should start to learn.

  1. Audacity - Mac/Windows - great free audio editing software. You can download and beging to try. We will begin to use in few weeks.
  2. i-Tunes - Mac/Windows - we will use i-tunes for many of the sound capturing and audio conversion.
  3. Quicktime - Mac/Windows - You will need this to view some of the videos in this class.
  4. Flash Player 10 - Many of the web sites today use Flash as the video player. You should have the latest player.

Video links -

  1. http://www.vimeo.com - this channel is not listed in the book. I like this channel and have a site.
  2. How about my section of http://www.vimeo.com
  3. http://www.joost.com/ - video site with mostly commercial products.

No Assignment this first week. I just want you to watch videos on the Internet. Think about how the world is changing with everyone able to make their own TV station. Think of http://www.rocketboom.com
