What is Digital Media? Jeff Ideas Digital Media is many things. First we need to break it down into terms. Digital – a language that computers understands. Media – communicating to people. Digital media is about taking an abstract world “computer tools” and turning it into something people can use and understand. Mostly this is done through people using software to make products. Sometime it is done through writing, like a word processor. Mostly it is people using digital tools to expression themselves by making movies, art, animation, web site, photography, games or publishing.	Webster Dictionary - Digital - 3. using numerical digits to represent discretely all variables occurring in a problem. Digital Computer - a computer that processes information in digital form. Media - 1. of medium. 2. the media. the means of communication
Lets look at one product and how Digital Media fits in:
The Apple iPod - All around this product Digital Media is created and used. Throughout this class you will meet and read about people who create Digital Media. Keep in mind where they might fit into the making of products.
The Idea - Make a product that can connect to computer, store digital audio, and be on the go.	Read this article of history of iPod.
The Product - There are many Digital Media experts that are in the design and development of a products. Industrial Designer - person who designs the case. Designs the look and feel of a product. Chip Designer - people who design the computer components with product. Programmers - people who write the software that make the product work.	Watch How Steve Jobs shows off products.
The Marketing - Marketing is about getting people excited and learn about a product. There are many Digital Media experts in the marketing field. Remember Digital Media is about communication. Event Planners - set up events for the launch of products. Web design and developer - there are many people in Digital Media that are involved the the making of a web site. The Content - The iPod would be nothing if it was not for the great content that can be played over this product. This is where Digital Media really comes in; Music - the iPod is about listening to music. Think about all the people that are involved in the writing, engineering, and distribution of music. Photography - the people that make the promotional photos for products and music. Graphic Design - people that design the packaging and support material. Video - Today the iPod can deliver video, think of all the people that are involved in the making of video, camera, storyboard artist, editing, compression specialist.
