Some Basic files formats for the Internet.

Any file format can be sent through the Internet. It is the World Wide Web and browers that can only display certain file formats. In addition, there are plugins that can be add to the browers that can allow more formats to be displayed. In this section only a few plugins will be explained.

Plugin - when you see this: it means a plugin is required to view this format in browers

Type of file Format Extension
Graphics 1. GIF - a graphic format with less than 256 colors, can have transparent layer
2. JPEG - graphic format than can have millions of color, It is highly compressed
3. PNG - can have up to millions+ colors, can include transparent layer and gamma information.

1. GIF animation - an animation made out of a series of gif images, can have a tranparent layer
2. DHTML - Dynamic HTML allows for a layer of information to animate across web browers

2. Video for Windows - Plugin -microsoft video format

Sound 1. Wave - basic sound, uncompressed
2. AIF - basic sound, uncompressed
3. MP3 -Plugin - very popular, highly compressed, CD quality sound
