The Computer

Devices that convert Analog to Digital or Digital to Analog.

Sound Cards

  • Input sound with microphone or tape player
  • Output sound to speaker
  • Control Midi devises like keyboards
  • Good sound boards are 16-bit or better

Video Card

  • Convert digital information into color information for the computer monitor
  • The quality of the monitor image is controlled by amount of RAM stored on the video card
  • Good video cards have at least 4 MB RAM and have Open GL

Video Capture Card

  • Convert analog video information into digital to be edited on computer then outputted back to analog video
  • The quality is controlled by how fast card can capture video - good is 5 to 10 MB per second
  • Good capture cards have both composite, S-VHS, and DV inputs

Modem

  • Converts analog signal in phone line into digital data
  • The quality is controlled by type of modem, average 56 kbps
  • Digital information is used by computer, like Web pages
