Lesson 1 - Welcome to the first lesson for the West Valley College Flash class. In this lesson we will look at several uses of Flash in Digital Media. Why Flash is used for Internet web sites. Other uses of Flash in Training and Entertainment.

What is Flash? Adobe Flash is what is called an authoring application. This application is used to put multiple media together into a digital media product. The multi media includes animation, sound, video, text, user input, data, and 3D graphics. All of these pieces can be put together into a file and delivered on a web site, CD, DVD, or mobile devise. Yes Flash is very popular for Cell Phones.
How is Flash Used?

Lets Look at Some Examples..

  1. http://www.princetennis.com - This is an example of almost the entire web site made in Flash. Many web sites use pieces of Flash of the site. This web site is almost all Flash. This site has three common Flash parts. 1. The slide show of pictures in the middle right of the screen. This is very common use of Flash. 2. The button that are used to move to different parts of the web site. 3. the Login is used to customize the site for each user. Just when you login to you email. Flash files can have programming "ActionScript 3" used to enhance a user experience.
  2. http://www.tennisindy.com/ - Yes another tennis site. This is an example of just part of the web site being made in Flash. The Middle slide show of this site is Flash. The rest of the Site is HTML. How do I know? Right click on the graphics on the page. If the graphic is Flash made it will have the Flash Player options at the end of the List. Try this. What if I have Mac with no right click. Buy a mouse with a right click, it works on Mac. Or hold the Control Key of the Mac key board and Click - This works like a right mouse click on windows.
  3. http://www.redbullrampage.com/ - Roll your mouse around this web site and see which parts are Flash. This is a good example of a Flash Video used on a web site. Flash video "FLV" is a different file than a Flash "SWF" file. We will learn about this next.
  4. http://www.imaginationcubed.com - this is a good example of Animation and Programming. Using the Flash ActionScripting 3 programming dynamic fully interactive site can be created. Many companies are using Flash for Training and Marketing web sites.
  5. http://www.dontclick.it/ - Another Fun Programming Example. But don't use the mouse!
  6. Music Video Example - This is good example of Flash animation. Notice animation sync with the sound.
  7. http://samorost2.net/plantage/plantage.swf - Good music video example. Mix of Photos and Vector Graphics.
  8. http://pascalcampion.com/door.swf - This an example of what we call in Flash, Frame by Frame animation.
  9. http://www.jacksonpollock.org/ - Wow this is a fun one.
How Flash Works?

First lets look at what flash outputs. When someone uses the Flash application to create media - they will need to deliver to an audience. As we saw above, most of the Flash files we see are over the Internet. When you clicked on the links above you where connecting to an HTML with a Flash file connected to that. The main Flash files on the Internet are SWF. This stands for "ShockWave Flash File". In order to see a SWF over the Internet you need a Web Browser with the Flash Player Installed on your computer. Wow seem complicated. It really is not, watch this video.

Vector Graphics - What makes Flash used so much on the Internet is that Flash makes small files. The reason Flash makes small files is that the graphics created in Flash are vector. Vector are objects, like the graphics created in Adobe Illustrator, Photos and other Bitmap graphics can be used in Flash. The Bitmap graphics are compressed as JPEG when a SWF is made in Flash. Read this handout on Vector and Bitmap.

For more info on this Please read the Introduction Chapter in the Flash Professional Book.

Chapter 1 in the Book.

Chapter 1 in the book is an introduction to the Flash application interface. It is important that you understand how to move windows, change options, and other. Please read entire chapter - with highlights below.

  1. Page 4 - make sure to use Action Script 3 when making a new document, this will be important when we begin programming.
  2. Page 10 - 13 - make sure you understand how to move, open, and docking windows - page 33
  3. Page 16 - make sure you understand how to change the document window "stage" size we will be doing this alot in this class.
  4. page 23 - Make sure you know how to turn Snap on and Off.
  5. Page 27 - Make sure you understand how to zoom with the Keyboard commands.
Assignment 1 - Make sure to send your full name and assignment number in the subject heading of all assignment emails. Send all assignments as plain emails, no attachments. Your own Flash Research - I would like you to search the Internet and find 3 good examples of how Flash is used on a web site. I will then post these examples for others in the class to see. How - search google, yahoo, or adobe web sites for examples. Search words like, "Flash Animations" "or Frame-by-frame animation" Try to find 3 different types of sites. For example the links I have above. Frame-by-frame example, music video example, and Flash web site example. send me the Links, by June 20.
