![]() | ANGELO, lovebird Most stray birds taken to an animal shelter don't win a prize, but I did! I was declared "the sweetest little bird ever taken in by the shelter." For my reward, ARA is going to find me a great home. I'm Angelo, a peach-faced lovebird. Obviously, since I was found as a stray, nothing is known about my background, but my foster parents think I'm young because I'm so curious and full of energy. I love to hang out with people. I'll sit on your shoulder, then climb down your arm to see what you are doing. So if there is anything you don't want me to get into, make sure you put it out of my reach! I "get into" good food as well. I try anything that's offered -- pellets, seeds, nutrian cakes, people food, and broccoli. In short, I am a real prize myself and you can try to win me by contacting ARA. |

BUTCH, amazon Here is an update from Butch's foster mom: "Butch is doing wonderfully!! He is the first amazon I've ever had and he has been really easy for me to handle and work with. I think he would make a good first amazon for someone (but preferably with someone who has experience with parrots). He isn't a cuddly bird, but boy is he a talker! He has picked up at least half a dozen sounds and words since I brought him into foster care. He isn't demanding or loud like I've heard many amazons can be. And I was worried about his behavior in the spring, since he is a DNA sexed male, but so far, his temperament has stayed VERY consistent and I still have only been bitten once (which happened the second day I had him) in the 6 or so months I've been fostering him. He is a very sweet boy. He also LOVES pasta. Spaghetti with angel hair pasta is his favorite. He could eat that forever. He also has been eating pellets really well for months now and he's just overall a terrific bird. I would keep him in a heartbeat if I thought I'd have the room when I go off to college." |

FRISCO, conure Hi! My name is Frisco and I'm one of those Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill you've probably heard about. I was found sitting under a tree last August by a nice man who took me to Animal Care and Control. They realized that I was a baby and needed help badly, so I wound up at ARA. I was dehydrated and starving to death; who knows how long I'd been out of my nest! My foster mom hand fed me and nursed me back to health, and now I'm just as happy and healthy as can be. I'm a bit small for a cherry-head conure, but I certainly don't lack any of the other famous conure traits like squawking and chewing anything I can get my beak on. I may be young, but I'm very talkative, and know a wide range of phrases like "Hi Frisco", and "I love you". My favorite thing to do is to hang out on your shoulder, preen your hair, and cuddle up under your chin. Do you have lots of room in your life for a little bit of fun like me? Adopt me! |

GRACE and RAINIER, cockatiels We are Princess Grace and Prince Rainier, recently rescued from exile at an animal shelter. We are a very bonded pair of pied cockatiels, about 2 1/2 years old. When we first came to ARA, we were incognito. OK, we were filthy. But now that we have enjoyed a wonderful bath, our royal beauty is shining for all to see. We even have a cockatiel crown of feathers, though Grace is missing a few jewels in her crown due to Rainier’s great preening skills. Unfortunately, we have not eaten like a king and queen in the past, being given little but seed. We’re learning to enjoy greens, though, and may develop a taste for a healthier menu. We also may enjoy handling if you’re patient with us. Right now, we like to have our subjects (er, people) around us but we are wary of hands. If you’re patient and understand how to treat birds royally, we would love to come rule in your home! |

RAINBOW, macaw Hi, my name is Rainbow. I was named after my beautiful feathers, which are the colors of the rainbow. I came from an unhappy situation. My mom and dad liked to smoke, and they did it right in front of me all day long. As a result, I started pulling out my feathers, trying to get the nicotine out of them. I am in a home now where no one smokes and I'm feeling better already. My foster mom tries to take me into the shower, but I'm afraid of the water because my previous mom and dad used to spray me with a squirt bottle whenever I made noise. We're still working on the showers, and one day, I will probably enjoy them. The good news is that my feathers are growing back anyway. I love to cuddle with my foster mom and look up at her adoringly. I have decided that she is an okay person and I will let her pet me for hours. I had been on a seed diet but the very first day that my new foster mom got me, she gave me pellets and I gobbled them right up! To this day, I still gobble them up and I eat pretty much everything else that is given to me. My only real problem is that when ARA got me, they discovered that my air sacs had been ruptured, and I have to go to the doctor every so often to get the air drained out of them. Hopefully this will get better. As a result, I'm a pretty quiet bird for a macaw but I do talk. I say hello when someone comes into the room and goodbye when someone leaves. I also call for my "mama", or sometimes just for "mom." I also sing "Somewhere over the Rainbow" but I haven't done that for my foster mom just yet. I also dance! I dance for everyone: at the doctor's office, at home, wherever there is an audience! I'm looking for someone to sing a duet with me while we dance. Could you be the one? |
