The Hustle was born in New York's Latin community. The mainstream young people caught on to the music and the dance style and Hustle quickly became hugely popular all over America and Europe, fueled in part by the movie. As Hustle developed, many different styles emerged. Hustle is still popular today and is danced to the contemporary pop dance music of the last 20 years. It is a fast, smooth dance, with a rhythmic pattern which plays with the timing of the music.

West Coast Swing is a style of Swing that became popular in California night clubs in the '30s and '40s and was voted the California State Dance in 1989. Hollywood captured some of the best dancers and musicians for all the public to see in the movies. The dance took root all over the US during the '40s via the soldiers and sailors dancing in the night clubs. West Coast Swing continues to be very popular across the US and is commonly danced to contemporary music.
